It is simply towards the finish so it actually starts to break apart, but the smack-up finale rescues it in the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can smartly dialogued, it will have no great problem into the way of living off its very unattractive label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin said “The movie moves from the a simple pace, the talk try advanced and you may characterisations fundamentally active. The fresh film’s copywriter and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal stakes, between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) has worked from the gambling enterprise and you may dated an effective corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures out-of love and you will hazard, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly assertive photos (together with their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a hidden classic of your category.” [ ten ]

Expert activities because of the Knob Powell, as the a betting home overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, because a police inspector, together with up the rating . Although the area uses a common trend, the fresh characterizations is new and the performances suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue are terse and relevant, avoiding the emotional, phoney reach. It is generally a point of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through their paces stylishly if you are an enormous cast of actors and you can performers promote him typical service. Evelyn Keyes plays the good little lady who brings forth the new best in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you will slinky vixen who becomes your on the jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy as villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do an alternative able trip because the a weary cops inspector exactly who in the end shuts your situation. Significant amounts of sipping and smoking is carried out by most of the alarmed.” [ several ]
